SIlksong Officially Delayed
People have been asking for some type of development update from Team Cherry for a while now and they have finally broken the silence. Matthew Griffin, who is the community and marketing director for Silksong and Crowsworn released a statement on Twitter “Hey gang, just a quick update about Silksong. We had planned to release it in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing. We’re excited by how the game is shaping up, and it’s gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can. Expect more details from us once we get closer to release”
It’s safe to say that this seemed like the likely course of action as we hadn’t heard a single thing from Microsoft or Team Cherry since it was announced that it would be released before June 12, 2023 at the Xbox Summer Showcase in 2022.
If the game isn’t ready to be released, it’s always better to delay it because the amount of games that are being released in a unfinished or broken state is constantly on the rise every single day and indie games are no longer immune to this issue.
Reading between the lines, it doesn’t seem like Silksong is going to be released in 2023 at all. They didn’t indicate that the new target is still the later half of 2023, which could have been a broad window. It’s hard to know exactly when development started on Silksong as it was announced in 2019 with a trailer that looked playable, but even going by 2018 when updates were still happening to Hollow Knight, that would only be 5 years. 5 years isn’t a long time for a game of this size, scale and quality especially when the core team is only 3 people with likely a few more helping out.
