Super Mario Wonder Embraces Metroidvania Genre
Super Mario Wonder has some cool new abilities and powers, but as a huge fan of Metroidvanias, what really piqued my interest was the new badge system.
In typical Metrodivania, you start out weak and then slowly add skills to you arsenal with the most common being dash, double jump, wall hang, grapple and things of that nature. The badge system in Super Mario Wonder is basically Nintendo, implementing those skills into the Super Mario Formula which looks to result in the best of both platformers and Metroidvanias..
Parachute Cap, Wall Climb Jump, Dolphin Kick, Timed High Jump, Crouching High Jump, Floating High Jump, Safety Bounce, Item Sensor, Coin Magnet, Invisibility, Jet Run and Grappling Vine are just a few that were revealed during the presentation.
You will be able to get new badges by purchasing them from vendors, and from completing challenge courses. These will drastically alter how you play the game, but unlike traditional Metroidvanias, you will only be able to equip one of these badges at a time. Combining one of the highlights of Metroidvanias and infusing it into the Super Mario Bros formula sounds like a pretty excellent time and just another reason to look forward to October 20.
