The Order 1886 Sequel (Will it Happen?)
The Order 1886 Sequel (Will it Happen?)
The Order 1886 might be the second most hyped PlayStation game of all time leading up to its release. The most hyped would be Killzone 2 with its absolutely ultra realistic trailer shown at E3 2006 leading up to the release of the PS3. Unrelated to the topic at hand and surprisingly, Killzone 2 actually delivered fairly close to the trailer and was a very fun time that established Guerrilla Games as a powerhouse developer in part of PlayStation’s third party portfolio that would eventually become first party when they were acquired years later.
Back to the topic at hand, will there be a sequel to The Order 1886?
The short and obvious answer would be no, because Ready at Dawn, the studio behind the PS4 exclusive, mostly transitioned into VR with Lone Echo and Echo arena, which were Oculus exclusives. Then in 2020, Ready at Dawn was acquired by Meta, meaning that if The Order 1887 was to happen, it wouldn’t likely be by Ready at Dawn, which isn’t to say that another studio counld’t refine and build upon the ideas of the first.
In the world of gaming, the talk of remakes and reboots are always in the air. Some of the hints that indicate Sony is even considering this is would be that The Order 1886 was featured in Astro’s Playroom as part of PlayStations heritage and in December 2021, PlayStation, who currently hold the rights to The Order IP renewed the trademark, according to PlayStation Lifestyle. If PlayStation felt like this IP wasn’t worth anything, they would be sweeping it under the rug.
The Order 1886 was short, at around 6-8 hours, was fairly linear and featured a lot of QuickTime events, which were on the cusp of being old hat in game development. But with only a 63 average, why should The Order 1886 make a return? The Order 1886 oozed atmosphere with its alternate SteamPunk version of 1886. The story was rich as it featured a world where Lichen, Vampire and other things that go bump in the night, walked the earth and you were part of a secret order to protect. The weapons were very imaginative, the universe felt unique and without a doubt, it was visually stunning to the point of being one of the best looking PS4 games

The foundation of something good is here and using it as a building block to move forward would likely lead to good results. If the sequel cuts back on a lot of the slow inspecting aspects of random objects, removes the majority of the QTE and continues to build the universe, there would be a sequel that people would love.
Having very high expectations isn’t the only thing that The Order 1886 shares with Killzone. The first entry in the Guerrilla series only scored a 70 but then went to have five more sequels, all of which scored better than the first, especially the first sequel which sits around a 91 average. I don't think its a coincidence that PlayStation saw something bigger in the series after the first game and hopefully the same will be true all the way up until The Order 1892.
