Golf has been added to Nintendo Switch Sports as a free update for owners, but the big question is, will golf add enough variety to Nintendo Switch Sports?

On its own, Switch Sports Golf is a bit of an enigma with plenty of features that are aimed towards casual gamers while at the same time offering a much more unforgiving experience. Casual features like simplified greens, standardized club and mostly removing lie options compared to very tough short game and sometimes unforgiving swing thanks to the improved tech in the joy con. Switch Sports Golf is trying to appeal to everyone, which is good in theory but in the end leaves no one extremely happy with the result.

As an addition to Nintendo Swtich Sports, Golf is a breath of fresh air and adding one new sport goes a long way. Back when we reviewed Nintendo Switch Sports, we gave it a strong 7, saying that it was a great base, all sports played well with improved tech but the main issue is the lack of sports with only 6 and some felt similar like tennis and badminton. Where were the classics from the first two entries like Baseball, Basketball, Boxing? Now that golf has been added how does that change the overall picture?

Golf includes the option to play locally with up to four players or online in Battle Royale Golf. Locally you can choose to play 3, 9, or 18 holes on 21 holes that feature different difficulty and scenery that are pulled from the previous title. You are given a three minute tutorial featuring the major aspects of the game and then you are hitting the links.

Whether or not Golf was ready at launch, in the long run, I think everyone will benefit because it will keep attention on the series, keep sales going and hopefully keep receiving new sports once or twice a year (Basketball and Dodgeball have been speculated). As of the last earnings report, Switch Sports has sold 6.15 million copies and according to Nintendo “has continued to grow steadily” Nintendo is clearly trying to get behind the family friendly title as their is going to be a Nintendo Switch Sports bundle in Japan, which should help the already decent sales for the title, especially if the bundle comes to other parts of the world.

If someone asked me is Nintendo Switch Sports worth buying? I would say, now that golf has been added it’s a great game to causally play with family when everyone gets together and the online options to play with friends is also very easy to do and fun.
