What is Killer Frequency?

Killer Frequency Preview

Killer Frequency is a first person adventure exploration game where you are trying to stop a serial killer in real time with your decisions making the difference between life and death for some of these small town citizens. Fans of games like Firewatch and What Remains of Edith Finch are sure to enjoy this adventure game with a different spin.

You play as Forrest Nash, a once big time disc jockey who finds himself at the bottom of the barrel in middle America, spinning tunes on late night radio against the backdrop of the 1980’s using a cell shaded aesthetic.

In a small town in nowheresville, with a population of around 1000 people, there are only three members of law enforcement to protect and serve. With the first one being murdered in the first few minutes, the other one being incapacitated and the third leaving to get help, you quickly become the last line of defence for the citizens of Gallows Creek as 911 has forwarded their calls to 189.16 KFAM.

Having your producer on the other end unfolds personal stories that help build out the story to give a real feeling to the town and helps understand who you are. In between trying to help the people of Gallow’s Creek using clues around the office such as the fax machine, you also need to run ads using the cassette player and spin some retro tunes for your evening listeners with your vinyl collection. Considering that the preview takes place completely in the radio station, there are plenty of clever ways to solve each case.

Gripes are minor, but it would have been nice to have an inventory that allowed you to collect the clues and things you need as opposed to holding them only during the time you need them and then discard them right beside you.

Killer Frequency is a very enjoyable murder mystery with a soundtrack and vibe of the mid 80’s and it would have been amazing if they were able to license some real 1980’s classics even though the in game music does a good job of masquerading as 1980’s classics. Obviously, the cost of licensing music isn’t cheap, but with only eight records that you play in rotation during the game, there are likely some 80’s artists who would have been thrilled to get any kind of pay check. The music of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is a huge part why that game is iconic.

Killer Frequency moves along nicely in the first few hours and hopefully the full game can continue this pace without too much filler. Killer Frequency is currently slated for a June 1, 2023 release date on pretty much everything including all consoles, PC and even VR. Our preview was played on Steam Deck where it was a perfect fit
