Wildfrost Preview (Deckbuilding Roguelite)

Wildfrost PREVIEW

INDIE RADAR EP. 4

If you’ve been looking for a deck builder rogue-lite that scratches that Slay The Spire itch, you might have found it with Wildfrost. So how does Wildfrost stand out from the crowd? Let’s find out on this week’s episode of Indie Radar.

First, you don’t have typical classes to start with predetermined abilities, instead, you select a leader that has randomized skills and traits.

Not only is Wildfrost turn based, but it also features a counter system as in countdown. Each card on the table has a turn counter and when it gets to zero that card automatically goes into action. This adds an another layer of strategy as you are constantly monitoring the battlefield for counters. Every action that you do affects each cards counter, although there are a few actions that don’t cost action points like reshuffling your hand or sending people to the healing bay.

There are also cards and character abilities that allow you to alter these counter. Putting a freeze on certain counters can help buy you some time before getting attacked or on the flip side, you can speed up your counters to get certain cards into action sooner.

As a rogue-lite, every run that you journey on will earn points that help unlock items and buildings at your town hub that can alter future runs. Each journey is similar to Slay The Spire, where you can decide your path depending on what you need. Everything you expect to find on a rogue lite run are here from treasure, buffs, charms and plenty of other things that will make each run feel unique.

Aesthetically, Wildfrost looks similar to Grindstone, with its bright and cute but violent 2D art style and is accompanied by some great card animations. If the demo is any indication of the full game, then Wildfrost is going to be the new deck builder on the block everyone is talking about.
